Forde, ACT
In 2004 the ACT's Land Development Agency (LDA), though a nationwide expression of interest campaign, sought developers to become the Joint Venture Partner with LDA for the development of a benchmark residential community at Forde in Gungahlin, the ACT's major growth area. The site has a total area of approximately 130Ha and will accommodate approximately 1,100 dwellings.
CIC joined forces with Delfin Lend Lease to bid for and, ultimately, win the project. The two companies formed Forde Development (ACT) Pty Ltd, a special purpose vehicle created for the project. Construction commenced on site in early 2006 and Forde has become one of Canberra’s premier masterplanned communities. Located just 15 minutes from Canberra’s CBD, Forde has set the standard for future Gungahlin communities.
Environmentally sustainable development principles are integral to the Forde masterplan. Inspired by the adjoining Mulligans Flat Nature Reserve, urban planners have created a green suburb, incorporating 39 hectares of open space into the residential neighbourhoods. The community includes 18 kilometres of hike and bike trails to actively encourage walking and cycling and reduce the suburb’s carbon footprint. A progressive water saving plan includes water-efficient landscaping, recycled water irrigation for parklands and an ongoing program for educating and encouraging locals to be water wise.
